Bioindication of troposher ic ozone by native vegetation: the potential of Viburnum lantana for large-scale surveys

چکیده
Introduction Because its oxidative power, tropospheric ozone is considered, on a large scale, the most harmful pollutant to vegetation (Ashmore, 2005). The exceedances of critical levels set to protect vegetation are quite high and widespread, so that large parts of crops and forests in Europe are exposed to potentially harmful levels of ozone (EEA, 2009). The impact of ozone on vegetation is the result of multiple factors such as the concentration in the atmosphere, the stomatal uptake which depends on environmental and physiological factors and the detoxification potential of plants. The complexity of these factors and their interactions can make it difficult to establish a clear relationship between ozone and plant response under field conditions, and therefore to evaluate whether an impact is actually occurring. The use of plants as bioindicators may be a solution because ozone-specific symptom expression reflects and summarizes all processes that occur between ozone exposure and the actual response of the plant (Sawidis et al., 2011).

Ozone air pollution and foliar injury development on native plants of Switzerland.
The objectives of this study were to examine the foliar sensitivity to ozone exposure of 12 tree, shrub, and herbaceous species native to southern Switzerland and determine the seasonal cumulative ozone exposures required to induce visible foliar injury. The study was conducted from the beginning of May through the end of August during 2000 and 2001 using an open-top chamber research facility l...
متن کاملBiological Control of Weeds in Mauritius: Past Successes Revisited and Present Challenges
Ten insect species were introduced to control five weeds on the island of Mauritius from 1914 to1982. Eight of these (80%) became established. The biocontrol programs against Opuntia vulgaris, O. tuna and Cordia curassavica were completely successful, with all three target plants now not considered as weeds, and requiring no management other than the ongoing, self-sustaining biological control....
متن کاملOzone Injury to Plants within the Seney National Wildlife Refuge in Northern Michigan
Annual field surveys were conducted from 1999–2004 within the Seney National Wildlife Refuge in northern Michigan to determine if ambient ozone levels at this remote location were great enough to injure refuge vegetation. Ozone injury was observed on sensitive bioindicator plants during each survey year; however, the incidence (percentage) of plants exhibiting symptoms was low and varied among ...
متن کاملOzone foliar symptoms in woody plant species assessed with ultrastructural and fluorescence analysis.
This paper compares the responses to ozone in five woody species: Fagus sylvatica (FS), Acer pseudoplatanus (AP), Fraxinus excelsior (FE), Viburnum lantana (VL) and Ailanthus altissima (AA). The hypothesis being tested was that the strategies that plants adopt to resist oxidative pressure are species-specific. The study was carried out on field grown plants in an area in Northern Italy characte...
متن کاملOzone air pollution effects on tree-ring growth, delta(13)C, visible foliar injury and leaf gas exchange in three ozone-sensitive woody plant species.
We assessed the effects of ambient tropospheric ozone on annual tree-ring growth, delta(13)C in the rings, leaf gas exchange and visible injury in three ozone-sensitive woody plant species in southern Switzerland. Seedlings of Populus nigra L., Viburnum lantana L. and Fraxinus excelsior L. were exposed to charcoal-filtered air (CF) and non-filtered air (NF) in open-top chambers, and to ambient ...
